Ashley's Story

She will leave fingerprints all over your heart

Allergic?

Over the past couple of months many have asked the question "Could she be allergic to the formula?" It is not felt that the problems are of a biochemical or physiologic nature, but rather of an anatomical nature. Ash is currently being fed the same formula which she was successfully taking prior to transplant. Before the transplant Ashley had never thrown up, not even one time in her life. We tried several different formulas and she tolerated the one we are currently giving extremely well. The current difficulties seem to be anatomical. She had a G-tube (a feeding tube going into the stomach) surgically placed when she was about 6 months old. During the transplant procedure the original g-tube was removed and a new one was placed higher in the stomach. The original placement of the g-tube closed up with some scar tissue which may now be impeding the proper drainage from the stomach into her new intestine. We believe that the problem may be this abnormal anatomy, not the type of formula being used. I hope this clarifies a bit. Thank you for your concerns about the type of formula, but we are confident this is not the problem.

I am sure you all get a lot of medical advice from both professionals and non-professionals alike. I am not the person who asked about the allergies, but I am wondering if they have tried breastmilk for her? Nothing is better for babies. I am with the LLL. Praying for all of you. Wonderful website! Beautiful baby!

Yes, we did try breastmilk, I agree breastmilk is best however Ashley was not successful with the breastmilk. It was just to rich for her while she had short bowel syndrome. We may possibly try it again after her surgery to reconnect the new transplanted small intestine to her native large intestine.

Thanks for responding to the formula allergy question and for your thorough explanation. It seems that sometimes medical staff overlook the simple/obvious and deal with their specialty, etc.

Re: the breastmilk suggestion. Maybe it could be diluted if it is still too rich when you try it again.

Please know that "we" are not questioning your decisions or the competency of the medical team but are just trying to offer helpful suggestions that might have been overlooked (which we have no way of knowing without asking).

:)
