Ashley's Story

She will leave fingerprints all over your heart

Change of Plans

Things are changing this morning and we are requesting transfer out to Shreveport via word from members of our transplant team. All lab work signs are pointing toward rejection of the small bowel, but nothing will be confirmed until biopsies are taken and sent out to NE to be read by pathology.

The biggest indicator at this point is the drop in her albumin levels. They are in the 1's down from the 3's and this is the red flag that caused concern. Combining that with the massive amounts of fluid coming from her ostomy and you have that ugly little word of rejection rearing its head.

If she is rejecting the bowel then it was more than likely triggered by the viral infection. To be blunt I think it sucks to get a tummy ache and end up in rejection, but such is the life of transplant.

Nothing is actually happening at this time. A page to our doctor was put out, then phone calls to our pediatric surgical team will be made, then the whole ambulance ride, and perhaps by this afternoon or early evening she will be in surgery to attempt a line placement once again and perform biopsies. They may not be able to make room for her on the schedule until tomorrow, but we can hope. The sooner we know the sooner we can start battling the monster.

Still we are praying she is not in rejection. There is still a small sliver of hope that this is just a horrible, horrible virus that has knocked her down. Your prayers during this time would be so appreciated. We are desperate for Ash to become herself again, and still we are desperate to keep our family together. The days ahead are uncertain and my big kids hearts have experienced more hurt than I would wish on anyone let alone children.

I hope to be able to run to the house to pack some bags with things I know we will be needing, but Dave's in the office and his mom is with my kids in Dallas at Nationals. I may be headed out with one set of clothes, a toothbrush, and my p.j.'s. Such is life in the world of transplant.

I'll update as soon as I know something more definite.
